Communications Coordinator - Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America - New York, NY
Based in our New York City office, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s (IAVA) a Communications Coordinator will support the Communication Department’s goal of raising public awareness of IAVA’s mission and the challenges impacting Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
S/he will play an integral role in executing our press strategy, pitching reporters on our issues, and cultivating a national roster of veteran spokespeople to represent the public face and voice of the organization. In addition, s/he will help draft IAVA’s national email communications and social
media to engage our member veterans and supporters.
For the position, we seek an exceptional writer, professed news/social media junkie and self-starter who thrives on deadlines, is passionate about pushing IAVA’s message in the media and ultimately wants to help a new generation of veterans share their stories with the American public. For the right candidate, the position offers a tremendous opportunity to learn and advance quickly in the communications field.
The Communications Coordinator will report to the Communications Director with a dotted line to the Chief Communications Officer.
Responsibilities:
Supporting overall press strategy for IAVA programs, policies and campaigns:
Tracking the news and breaking alerts about the wars, U.S. military, veterans issues, and developments on Capitol Hill;
Supporting the generation and distribution of IAVA’s Daily News Brief for members and supporters;
Drafting press releases, statements and talking points for media under the guidance of the Communications Director;
Cultivating IAVA’s national roster of veteran spokespeople;
Working with other departments to generate daily content for our in-house blogs on IAVA.org and NewGIBill.org;
Supporting the Communications Director with research for op-eds and other writing projects tied to key campaigns and initiatives including Veterans Day, Memorial Day, etc;
Organizing press conferences, speaking engagements, and other IAVA events;
Filing and maintaining IAVA’s online press archive and database;
Supporting the Chief Communications Officer as needed;
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Exceptional writing and communications skills;
Strong news and political sensibilities;
Strong proficiency with social media;
Basic understanding of HTML and web publishing;
Salesforce data management, Photoshop and video editing skills a plus;
Calm and efficient under pressure and deadlines;
Master organizer and multi-tasker;
Excellent attention to detail;
Willing to work a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and occasional weekends;
Enjoys and excels at working as part of a team;
Self-starter with a great sense of humor;
Passionate about IAVA’s mission and commitment to veterans.
