High Voltage Electrician


SUMMARY:Performs a variety of electrical trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of electric energy.


DUTIES:

Essential Functions:

Work involves most of the following: installing or repairing any of a variety of electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment; working from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or other specifications; locating and diagnosing trouble in the electrical system or equipment; working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment; and using a variety of electrician’s hand tools and measuring and testing instruments. In general, the work of the maintenance electrician requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.


Duties specific to this job at this location:

1.Install, operate, maintain and repair electric wires, poles, crossarms and supports, transformers, and other equipment and accessories of electrical power for distribution lines between power generation plant, substations and consumers.

2.Operate, maintain and repair overhead, underground and temporary above-ground distribution system to include cable, pothead, cable box, oil fuse cutout, load limiter, control, instrument, etc.

3.Install, operate, maintain and repair outside lighting, street lighting and security lighting.

4.Operate, maintain and repair navigational aids, assemble and install airfield lights and associated equipment. Installs, maintain, and repair all associated exterior electrical components in primary switching stations and secondary distribution centers and substations.

5.Install, operate, maintain and repair distribution transformer, current regulator, oil circuit breaker, insulator, switching gear, control circuit, etc.

6.Install, maintain and repair low voltage electrical distribution system, lighting, circuit breaker, etc., and equipment field deployed and permanent facilities.

7.Modify and substitute foreign electrical components such as breaker, receptacle, etc., to suit local installation and field requirement.

8.Interpret electrical data and provide technical requirements to supply personnel, planners, and work control technicians. Installs and maintains emergency light(s).

9.Install, maintain, and repair battery bank and charger.

10.Perform cable splicing high and medium voltage lines.

11.Perform cable termination on high and medium voltage lines.

12.Assist power production technicians in performing electrical distribution connections associated with portable generator, regulator, etc.

13.Maintain, with power production personnel, 50/60- and 50/400-cycle frequency converters.

14.Install additional power feeds to temporary and permanent facilities, such as billets and office facilities.

15.Understand and apply primary and secondary distribution system constraints under field and emergency conditions.

16.Open required high-voltage switches to de-energize line or equipment to be worked on, tests for the voltage, and clamps grounding device to equipment to insure safety of workers.

17.Use insulated bucket truck to service broken or defective wires or equipment.

18.Secure new wires to crossarm insulators and connects wire to adjoining section of line to complete circuit.

19.Transfer wires from existing poles to other poles.

20.Erect new poles and crossarms, direct ground personnel in digging holes, setting poles and installing guy wires and other supports, and pulls and sags wires.

21.Install and maintain transformers, capacitors, insulators, lightning arrestors, switches, circuit breakers, and other accessories used in connection with high-voltage distribution lines.

22.When necessary, work in, near, or on “hot lines” using appropriate equipment.

23.Uses meters and instruments to test electrical parts.


QUALIFICATIONS:


MINIMUM


DESIRED


Education


A.A or Technical degree in related discipline. Two (2) years of additional experience may substitute each missing year of education. High Voltage Electrical and Substation apprenticeship.


Experience


Two years journey-level Electrician and five years with exterior overhead and underground power line maintenance, including analysis of High Voltage controls circuits for power generating and distribution systems up to 115 KV.


Experience with high voltage safety equipment such as: high voltage isolation equipment; high voltage discharge hooks; grounding clusters; high voltage buss clamps; high voltage mats; high voltage safety shields, gloves and insulation blankets.


Experience with high voltage test equipment such as: HI Pot, thumper, fault locating Radar, high voltage volt meter Range Ovac to 50 KV, non-contact high voltage detector, high voltage cable locator, shot gun (hot stick), infrared/thermal camera, high voltage meggers.


Air Force or other military experience preferred.


Skills


Skill in use of hand and power tools common to Electrician trade. Ability to troubleshoot down to the component level. Ability to understand and apply codes, blueprints, diagrams and engineering drawings. Knowledge of operation / installation of a variety of complete electrical systems / equipment.


CPR and/or Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Qualified.


Certificate, License, Registration, etc.


Valid driver’s license.


Travel Required


100% Overseas Assignment.
