The office of Safety & Emergency Management at the Stanford School of Medicine seeks a knowledgeable and proven Health and Safety Specialist 2 who can perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university’s environmental, health and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements. The role will apply EHS programs and advocate for regulatory compliance practices to achieve program excellence and continuous improvement. Success is measured through the integration of program goals into standard work practices in alignment with business goals and values including incremental improvement in the culture of safety at the School.
Responsibilities include:
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge, expertise and best practices of federal, state and local health and safety regulations and an ability to apply them in an academic setting.
- Assist in building a Culture of Safety, which coaches leaders to be visible EHS advocates.
- Work closely with facilities operations, laboratory staff, and departmental management to ensure compliance in laboratories and support and administrative areas including safe practices in mechanical areas and loading docks.
- Respond to inquires, determine needed actions from clients specifically focusing on OSHA, EPA and Life Safety policies, biosafety guidelines as well as Stanford University guidelines for safety and environmental compliance.
- Partner with a cross-functional team of University and regulatory subject matter experts on compliance issues and inspections to ensure alignment with local policies and best practices.
- Lead safety teams in understanding local and regional long-term compliance practices, and implementing new program developments for consistency between local locations. Provide guidance and training to School faculty, staff, and students to ensure understanding of compliance expectations and best practices using various means including webinars, classroom sessions, direct interactions, and web-based approaches.
- Perform risk assessments and report results to clients and management.
- Perform internal audits and external government inspections, expeditiously take appropriate actions to ensure compliance and prevent reoccurrence, and assist with tracking and trending of findings.
- Apply and refine program elements to enhance compliance and auditing within the School including working with complex databases to gather information and develop/refine tools.
- For assigned locations, expeditiously respond to accidents, injuries, illnesses, odor complaints, and hazardous materials spills. Investigate mold and asbestos incidences in conjunction with local business partners.
- Prepare incident reports and communicate with affected employees and managers.
- Demonstrate knowledge of research and administrative facility design parameters while reviewing architectural and construction plans as well as specifications.
- Demonstrate knowledge of emergency preparedness and recovery procedure fundamentals and ensure the safe evacuation of personnel in assigned buildings.
- Generate weekly communications with clients, team members, regulators and other stakeholders. Information is disseminated in an array of formats including presentations, webinars, webpage content, and small and large group meetings.
- Ensure accuracy of documentation and communications.
- Ensure timely and accurate safety information by developing and monitoring content on the internal Safety & Emergency Management website.

Job Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and three to seven years progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessments, and data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
- Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
- Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
- Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
- Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
- Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
- Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.
