Online Communications Coordinator - Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America - New York, NY

Based in our New York City Headquarters, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is seeking an Online Communications Coordinator. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic organization as it enters its second decade at the forefront of the veterans’ movement, advocating for our newest generation of heroes.

The Online Communications Coordinator leads the execution of IAVA’s social media and online strategies, working with staff and members to develop stories on issues important to the veteran population, while cultivating an active online community.


The Online Communications Coordinator reports to the Communications Director.


Essential Functions


  • Lead IAVA’s social media program of 625,000-plus followers, raising awareness of IAVA’s mission, advocacy and programs while guiding the national online conversation on veteran’s issues;

  • Build and execute social media strategy through research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification;

  • Develop content to tell the IAVA story, humanizing the brand and educating:
    • The public about new veterans and mobilizing them to support the veteran community;

    • Veterans about policies and issues that impact their lives;

    • Policy makers and influencers about new veterans, with the goal of developing policy and building a coalition of good will to support the veteran community;


  • Increase brand awareness/engagement across social networks by following and sharing news and current events that affect the veteran community;

  • Increase social media engagement during IAVA’s activations and campaigns, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day;

  • Coordinate social media to support IAVA’s strategic partnerships and marketing efforts;

  • Identify advocacy and promotional content opportunities;

  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, HTML, and/or video) that builds meaningful connections and mobilizes our members;

  • Flexibility to monitor and engage on social media platforms on nights and weekends depending on the news and events cycle.

Education and Experience


  • BA degree with coursework related to advocacy, communications, marketing or data analysis;

  • 1-3 years of experience in the field of online campaigning, communications or marketing;

  • Experience with our Constituent Relationship Manager, Salesforce;

  • Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills – both talking and listening are critically important to success in this role;

  • Ability to engage staff collaboratively at all levels of the organization;

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills;

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills;

  • Able to develop plans with clear goals, roles, timeline, metrics and budget estimates;

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment that demands rapid content development;

  • Basic HTML/CSS/JS skills (including HTML5 and CSS3) a plus;

  • Photoshop, photography and videography, and video editing experience a plus.
