(AFG-KABUL) Baggage Handler
Job Summary:
Baggage handlers are responsible for loading, unloading and sorting freight and baggage in support of the U.S. Department of State (DoS), Bureau for Diplomatic Security (DS), under oversight from the Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Office of Aviation (INL/A).
Principal Accountabilities
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for maintaining safety and security of the ramp at all times
- Adhere to required security procedures and hazardous material handling requirements.
- Transfer baggage from and to all aircraft
- Observe safe Ground Support Equipment (GSE) procedures
- Responsible for courteous, prompt, accurate and careful handling of customer baggage, airfreight and Company Materials (COMAT), (continuous lifting, loading/unloading, sorting & transfer of baggage, freight, COMAT), weighing and tagging all baggage/cargo and documents.
- Assist in ramp set-up and storage of equipment and baggage
- Assist in aircraft cleaning and servicing
- Constant communication with Operations, Flight Crew personnel, and other ground personnel
- Reporting any suspicious-looking baggage items to Flight Crew or Aviation Operations Manager

Knowledge & Skills
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others
- Prior supervisory experience
- Understanding of airline systems and ground support operations
- Able to fluently read, write, speak and understand English
- Ability to work under stressful situations and tight time constraints
- Be aware of and observe safety procedures at all times
- Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) through the Department of State background investigations is a condition of employment; a current MRPT is preferred.
Experience & EducationTwo (2) years recent experience, as a Baggage Handler, Fleet Service Agent, and/or Ramp Agent in a commercial or military aviation operation.
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must be able to run, walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for up to 8 hours minimum per day and sit for up to three hours per day.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Must be able to climb stairs, ramps ladders and work stands
- Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders
- May be required to carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds
- Employee must be able to continually lift and carry 75 pounds
- May be required to lift up to 75 pounds to height of four feet and be required to lift up to 40 pounds to height of 7 feet
- Must possess the ability to read and interpret safety manuals, technical procedures or regulations
- Must be able to see imperfections, micrometer readings and other small scales
- May be required to operate power, machinery, hand tools, etc.
- Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear
- Must be able to distinguish color and judge three-dimensional depths
Must be capable of living and working in a potentially hostile environment for an extended period. May be required to travel to and between remote location(s) in austere environments. May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure. May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts, vehicles, or aircraft.
TravelTravel to and between CONUS and OCONUS locations as requested is required.
