Research Associate 2, HSS - Yale University - New Haven, CT

Under the general direction of the Principle Investigator (PI), this individual will be responsible for the administration and monitoring of multiple on-going projects related to large-scale political violence between and within states since 1800 in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and, to a lesser extent, Russia’s Northern Caucasus. Manages a large team of more than twenty student research assistants on campus and in the field and assists PI in budgeting and monitoring of grant. Works independently to identify new sources of data to collect, whether at Yale or in other data repositories at other universities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private firms, or militaries. Seeks out partners at these institutions to help acquire new data, either via data sharing or purchasing. Has fiscal authority to make data purchases to facilitate progress in data collection. Designs and implements training to student researchers on the proper data collection sequences. Works independently to create, revise, and streamline these training procedures and data collection efforts. Directs the quality control process without direct supervision of the PI. Writes, designs, develops and produces weekly progress reports for each of the associated data projects. Proposes metrics for assessing metrics; adjusts accordingly based on the project’s life cycle. Hires, coordinates, and manages a large team of researchers in various data collection tasks both on campus and in the field. Independently conducts interviews to identify best candidates for each position; writes job descriptions and sets wage scales. Handles research assistant issues associated with salary and other grant outlays including spending across multiple research accounts. Works independently to identify outside consultants for specialized skills such as website design, statistical services, and computer programming. Has fiscal authority to sign contracts for these services. Is responsible for designing benchmarks and monitoring progress on stated goals; has the ability to terminate contracts for non-compliance. Independently identifies additional grant opportunities and prepares grant proposals, including budget projections. Designs and writes short reports for public dissemination of core findings as well as for compliance with existing grant reporting requirements.

Essential Duties

1. Carries out research within the scope of the established study protocol. Adheres to all human subjects regulations as defined by Yale University and the federal government that pertain to research studies. 2. Develops criteria for admission of study subjects based on goals and objectives of project. 3. Determines potential sources of funding and prospective partnerships. 4. Evaluates feasibility of accepting potential projects through analysis of staffing needs, resource requirements, financial costs, and current planned capacity of group. Negotiates contracts and/or changes with funder. 5. Develops original HIC/IRB submissions. Based on knowledge of science and research goals, collaborates with PIs on major revisions and contributes to scientific protocols. Plans and implements changes. 6. Develops forms, questionnaires and the application of research techniques; writes procedures manuals for data collection and coding. 7. Responsible for the documentation and transmission of study data. Ensures that report forms are accurately documented and completed in a timely manner at each site location. 8. Works independently to develop manage and organize multi site studies. Serves as primary coordinator between University, non-Yale collaborators, pharmaceutical companies, HIC, IRB and funding sources. 9. Performs descriptive and multivariate statistical analyses of data, using computer software. 10. Designs and implements quality control measures to ensure accurate collection and processing of data. 11. Contributes in-depth, original thought and relevance to written reports and to the writing of abstracts and manuscripts.


Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in a related discipline and two years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to speak a foreign language.


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to coordinate and manage large teams of researchers.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Advanced skill with Google Documents and strong computer skills to facilitate use of database for entry, and ability to work with HTML and web-editing tools.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to set priorities and work independently. Exercise sound judgment.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills, organization and planning skills. Ability to supervise and to communicate regularly with research teams to maintain timeline and identify challenges to progress.
