Water Wastewater Laboratory Technician


Reportsto:PAE-AEK Water/Waste Water Supervisor

Performance Location:The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the United States Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on projects at the US Embassy and other locations in Afghanistan. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 20% of the total time. The individual will comply with all US Embassy security, work-related, and residential rules and procedures.

Work Schedule: This position works 10 hours/day, 6 days a week and must be available for duty on the seventh day. The candidate is on-call 24/7 and must be able to quickly respond to emergencies and contingencies as they occur to ensure the continued operation of the regional office.

Working Environment:The candidate will work in a traditional office setting as well as construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with traveling to and working on such sites.

Major Dutiesand Responsibilities: The Laboratory Technician will perform work required for the operation, maintenance, repair, installation, and testing of water/waste water treatment systems for buildings and grounds on the U.S. Embassy:


  • Conducts water quality tests to ensure water meets the U.S. Department of State Office of Safety / Health and Environmental Management (SHEM) Drinking Water Safety Program portable water standards.

  • Conducts tests to ensure wastewater effluent and sludge meet local government laws as approved by the USG.

  • Collects water samples from various locations, records data for regulatory reports and adjusts chemical feed rates as required for compliance and process control.

  • Analyze various samples for Ammonia, BOD, COD, Hardness, MPN, Nitrate and TSS testing. Thorough understanding of complex chemical and biological reactions and modifications of these reactions.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Highly Desirable Skills/Qualifications:




  • 2+ years of prior experience with Water or Waste Water operations and testing procedures.



  • Previous experience with the U.S. Department of State or Department of Defense is preferred.

  • Experience in an austere OCONUS environment with a multi-national work force is preferred. Able to work effectively with multi-cultural workforce

  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of water/wastewater treatment equipment and systems.


  • Must be friendly, customer service oriented and able to handle customer service issues in a calm, rational manner.

    Education:




  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age and have completed High school.




  • Two- year college degree or completion of Technical Trade school is preferred.

    Language:




  • Must be fluent in speaking, reading, and writing English.



  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, management, and the client.

    Citizenship: US Citizenship is not required for this position.

    Clearance: Must be able to obtain a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT).
