(AFG-KANDAHAR) Aircraft Technical Inspector
Job Summary
The Aircraft Technical Inspector performs the full range of aircraft inspection functions including assembly and modification (MWO) of a variety of aircraft, their major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and related systems.
Principal Accountabilities
- Responsible for maintaining the Quality Control and Safety Programs at the field level.
- Performs the full range of aircraft maintenance inspections.
- Inspects installation, connection, and adjustments of complete systems such as fuel, heat, lubrication, hydraulic, engine, and transmission: Inspects the installation and alignments of fuselage parts; to include balances, alignments, and installations of tail rotor assemblies; completely rigged flight control systems.
- Inspects incorporated authorized modifications and changes.
- Inspects operational checks of hydraulic and fuel systems using external power sources and powered ground equipment.
- Inspects mechanics while troubleshooting to determine cause of malfunctions; disassembles to point of trouble; adjustments, repairs, realignments or replacements of defective components or assemblies.
- Inspects the work of mechanics for complete assembly, modification and checkout of the entire aircraft and coordinates with related trade AMIII’s and AMII’s such as electrical, avionics, and sheet metal to assure proper sequence of the complete aircraft assembly process.
- Evaluates training programs, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintains technical publications, forms and records relative to aircraft maintenance
- Performs audits to include personnel, equipment and facilities to maintain compliance to procedures, regulations (OSHA, HAZCOM, EPA, etc).
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled inspections to determine the condition of assigned equipment and proficiency of maintenance personnel
- Completes initial and ongoing risk/safety assessments and implements mitigation plans.
- Through objective sampling, observations, and analysis of findings, determines the overall condition of the maintenance effort. Identifies potential problem areas and suggests solutions.
- Maintains awareness of regulatory changes and disseminates safety-related bulletins, technical changes and literature to work site personnel.
- Investigates mishaps and injuries.
- Performs a variety of other inspections, investigations, and advisory duties.
- Must be customer oriented and ensure professional coordination with Operations and other base agencies.
- Perform other qualified duties as assigned
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of the makeup, operation, installation and modification of a wide variety of classes, models and series of aircraft, their major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components and related systems.
- Technical knowledge of the aircraft models and components/sub-assemblies assigned for maintenance, modification and repair.
- Ability to assemble a variety of system assemblies, and sub-assemblies such as fuel and hydraulic systems, tail boom assemblies, and the power train. Must be able to connect, mesh, align and adjust the system with one another and to determine the sequence of installation of these systems for proper coordination of the entire aircraft assembly process.
- Must be able to properly use a variety of common hand tools and measuring devices such as gauges, torque wrenches and scales and test, measurement and diagnostic equipment related to specific aircraft models.
- Must be able to trouble shoot and determine when faulty systems or assemblies can/can’t be corrected through repair of replacement of new parts and the nature and extent of repair required.
- Must have skill in reading, applying and interpreting technical data.
- Must have skill in the use and read-out of powered ground aviation support equipment.
Experience & Education
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Six (6) or more years’ experience in maintenance, modification and repair of tactical aircraft systems of the type being serviced and their associated components as set forth in individual task orders.
- Two (2) or more year’s aircraft inspector experience on fixed or rotary wing aircraft in the last five (5) years.
- Completion of U.S. military tactical aircraft maintenance or U.S. military technical school is desired.
- Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P;) license.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Is required to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch and work in tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts parts and equipment up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts objects up to 50 pounds. Most heavy lifting is accomplished through the use of mechanical devices.
- Individual must be immediately deployable to potential hostile/combat areas worldwide and qualify for a National Security Position (U.S. Secret Clearance).
Travel
- As required in support of task order.
