HVAC Journeyman
Job Description Maintains, installs, and repairs air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating units and related equipment as
assigned. Diagnoses causes of equipment breakdowns, tests parts with appropriate instruments,
disassembles and assembles parts, and makes necessary repairs. Checks levels of refrigerant; adds or
replaces refrigerant using appropriate tools and methods to maintain proper control of gas at all times.
Studies building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of
installations. May measure windows or other existing openings, or cut through walls, using a mallet, cold
chisel, or other tools to install new units. May drill holes to mount units and lift parts into position. Locates
and marks position of pipe and/or duct connections and passage holes for same in walls and floors, using
ruler, spirit level, and plumb bob. Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and/or duct
fittings, using hand tools and power tools. Cuts and threads pipe, using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and
pipe-threading machine. Connects motors to control panels and balances motors to ensure efficient
operation. Connects control panels to power source. May weld holding fixtures to steel structural
members.

Position may be located in a war zone in a contingency environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions, including lifting and carrying 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time. To ensure safety, health, and security measures within the contract are met, all employees shall be literate in English (read, write, speak and understand).
Living conditions on the project are most likely austere. The most austere sleeping may be in environmentally conditioned tents on “Army type” cots. Restrooms and showers may be 250 feet or further from sleeping quarters. Laundry service for 15 pounds twice per week is commonly provided. Meals are provided at regular intervals in cafeteria or “dining facility” style environment. Living area will most likely have constant hum of generators or similar equipment nearby.

Basic Job Requirements High school diploma / GED equivalent preferred. A minimum of 42 months (3.5 years) verifiable, directly
related experience is required.
Other Job Requirements Requires the technical skills, job knowledge and physical ability necessary to perform assigned job
functions. Core HVAC work assignments: EPA Type I and Type II certification is required.
Low pressure system work assignments: EPA Type I and Type III certification is required.
Universal certification is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications Prior Military and/or Contingency Operations experience preferred.
