Afghanistan: Afghanistan: Resident Journalism Advisor
GENERAL FUNCTION
Internews is seeking an experienced journalist and media development professional to support the implementation of the media strategy for the USAID/IOM Combatting Human Trafficking in Afghanistan project. Under this project, Internews will work with local media partners to raise public awareness and build skills and capacity to report on issues relating to trafficking in persons in Afghanistan.
The Resident Journalism Advisor (RJA) will be responsible for: developing training materials on media reporting around trafficking in persons and providing training and mentoring to in-house staff and reporters of Internews key partners Salam Watandar Radio Network and Pajhwok Afghan News. He/she will work with these partners to build their capacity and enhance the production of high quality, relevant and effective media productions. The RJA will report to the Internews Country Director in Afghanistan.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop tailor-made training materials for journalists and reporters, editors, producers, and other newsroom staff of local partner organizations Salam Watandar and Pajhwok Afghan News;
- Plan, coordinate and lead training with the two partner organizations to increase the quality of content production and create new programming, including radio drama;
- Provide mentoring to staff of the two partner organizations to develop content and produce high quality programming;
- Support and facilitate the establishment of relationships between media/journalists and networks/organizations working on combating human trafficking in Afghanistan;
- Develop and maintain keen understanding of trafficking related issues affecting the Afghan community, including security and political factors;
- Draft, review and provide input to monthly, quarterly, annual and close-out reports, as required;
- Support Internews’ communication efforts to promote and publicize project activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience managing projects funded by US and/or European agencies or international organizations in complex development environments;
- Experience working with the media in Afghanistan or similar contexts highly desirable;
- Proven training or mentoring abilities, preferably including training of local national staff;
- Experience as a senior journalist including news management experience;
- Experience in print and radio journalism and training preferred;
- Experience designing and facilitating journalism training and production with professionals and students;
- Team-building skills and the ability to manage staff;
- Demonstrated organizational skills; ability to prioritize workload and meet deliverables in a challenging environment;
- Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place.
