Overview:

PAE is currently seeking an Power Plant Controls Technician to support the US Department of State and will be stationed at Camp Sullivan, Kabul, Afghanistan. The candidate will work on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with such sites.


Responsibilities:


The Power Plant Controls Technician will: – Work within all safety guidelines and company safety policies. – Be responsible for assisting with data collection and record keeping of various systems in operation according to prescribed schedules. – Interpret system operation readings and assists with making recommendations for needed corrective actions. – Be responsible for mechanical, electrical and PLC related operations & maintenance. – Assist with the preparation of purchase orders for equipment, parts and supplies as well as coordinating receipt and storage of material. – Be responsible for timely compliance of established policies and procedures, including environmental-health safety policies for a safe work environment. – Maintains effective, timely and respectful communication with customers. – Create and foster professional environment for employees and supervisors to achieve highest level of customer service standards. – Assist Lead Mechanic with supervising staff and provides effective leadership, team building and consensus building skills with colleagues, supervisors and subordinates. – Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


  • Graduate of a power generation or diesel engine trade school with seven years of apprentice/journeyman level experience in the operation and maintenance of diesel engine power and power plant controls preferred. Strongly preferred is either completion of an Apprentice program with a Journeyman Certificate, or have an AA/AS degree in power generation from a two year college, and/or equivalent field experience. – High school diploma or GED required. – Must have practical experience with GE (General Electric) electronic control and monitoring systems within a diesel powered power plant. – Must have theoretical knowledge and functional/operational work experience of power generation, control room, various size generators (CAT 3512), (CAT 3516), alternators CAT 1MV, 24vDC to 15kVAC power generation-distribution grid, GE and Siemens systems, PLC and electronic controls, switchgear, step-up and step-down transformers, substations, fusible switches, SCADA system and automatic transfer switches. – Must have at least 2 years of formal education in a mechanical trade, diesel engines, controls and electricity accompanied by related verifiable certificates – Mechanical and electrical background in power production and distribution. – 7 years’ experience operating and troubleshooting of diesel power plants is preferred. – Hands-on knowledge (minimum five years’ experience) in the operation & maintenance of switchgear controls, distribution switchgear, simple electrical circuits, AC and DC theory, PLC’s and ladder logic, basic electrical formulas, transformer functions, motor controls, and Microsoft WORD, Excel and Outlook applications. – Experience in troubleshooting and diagnostics of GE controls that interface with Caterpillar controls and other digital systems. – Experience with the tools and electrical measuring meters of the trade. – Previous overseas experience working with a multi-national workforce is highly desirable. – Must have good organizational and communication skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently. – Must possess current Secret Clearance. US Citizenship is required for this job. – Excellent oral and communication skills in English are required. – Good computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel) are required. – Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required for work on projects at other locations in Afghanistan. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time. – This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum. The candidate participates in a duty phone rotation and must be willing to quickly respond to emergencies and contingencies as they occur to ensure the continued 24/7 operations of the facilities.
