(AFG) Aerospace Structural Welder


Job Summary


The Aerospace Structural Welder performs fusion welding on aircraft and ground support equipment to a qualified Welding Procedures Specification (WPS).


Principal Accountabilities


  • Perform structural fusion welding on aerospace parts and components per the requirements of specifications as prescribed by Engineering Drawings and Work Orders.

  • Read and understand engineering drawings and welding symbols.

  • Fabricate manufacture-welded parts from engineering drawing without direct supervision.

  • Perform fusion welding and torch brazing for ground support equipment, ensuring the procedure is completed per the requirements of the national welding and brazing codes and specifications.

  • Weld a wide variety of materials such as aluminum, magnesium, alloyed and low alloy steel, stainless steel and nickel alloy steels.

  • Determine the sequence of welding in order to prevent or reduce the amount of warp to the weld.

  • Design and fabricate weld holding fixtures as necessary to perform individual welding projects.

  • Perform pre-heat and post weld stress relief operations, maintains weld records.

  • May perform duties as a Qualified Weld Inspector by inspecting own welds and those of less qualified welders.

  • May perform duties such as training and re-certification in the various welding processes.

  • Perform other qualified duties as requested.

Knowledge & Skills


  • Knowledge of equipment related to individual specialty codes.

  • Knowledge of military publications (including electronic manuals), drawings, blueprints, microfilm, diagrams and schematics is mandatory.

  • Knowledge of military and/or company forms required by work requirements.

Experience & Education


  • Completion of high school or equivalent and U.S. military technical school or specialized training course is desired, certification of education level is required.

  • Four (4) or more years aviation maintenance experience within the past (6) years to include repair, modification, maintenance and overhaul of equipment related to individual specialty codes.

  • Valid FAA Airframe & Power plant (A&P;) license is preferred.

  • Qualification certificates for each welding standard required.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment


  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.

  • Must be able to climb stairs, ramps, ladders, and work stands.

  • Must be able to crouch, crawl, grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbow/knee and reach above/below shoulders.

  • May be required to lift heavy objects whose weight may exceed 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.

  • Will handle dirty parts and lubricants.

  • Will be required to wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Physical and Fit Test qualification.

  • May be required to operate power vehicles, machinery, hand tools, ground support equipment, fork lift, etc.

  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 50 pounds.

  • May work in normal office environment, maintenance shop or outside.

  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.

  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.

  • May be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts or vehicles.

Travel


  • As required in support of task order.
