KIT (Royal Tropical Institute) in Amsterdam is a multifaceted center of expertise for international and intercultural cooperation. KIT aims to improve health and ensure equitable socio-economic development.


KIT Health aims to improve the health of people in low- and middle-income countries by cooperation on research, evaluation, advice and education. Our mission is to improve equity in health by empowering people and strengthening health systems. We work with partners to generate context-specific knowledge and to build capacity at the interface of policy and practice. Key thematic areas of work are education, sexual and reproductive health & rights, health systems strengthening and disease prevention and control.


KIT Health, jointly with an Afghan partner, is responsible for the implementation of a project for the Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan, providing “Consulting Services for Third Party Monitoring and Evaluation under SEHAT Project”. The project consists of collection of nationally representative data on quality and utilization of services from health facilities and households during 2015 – 2018. KIT seeks to strengthen its internal management of the project, as well as to support both our local partner and the health ministry in strengthening the implementation of the Third Party Monitoring and Evaluation work.


For this project we are looking for a colleague with strong experience in project management and interest in monitoring and evaluation of health systems. This position is based in Kabul, Afghanistan, with occasional trips to the Netherlands.


For this project, KIT Health is seeking a:


Project Coordinator Afghanistan (m/f)


for a full-time position, preferably starting on or before September 1, 2016


Main responsibilities


These consist primarily of the provision of high level organizational support to the Project Manager and Team Leader, including monitoring of project progress and coordination:



  • Represents KIT Afghanistan and the Third Party M&E project to key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Public Health and other relevant Ministries in Afghanistan




  • Coordinates and strengthens project administration and reporting (finance, admin) between the Amsterdam and Kabul offices;




  • Assists with timely delivery of project deliverables in close coordination with the project manager and technical staff; highlights delays and bottlenecks and communicates these to the relevant task holders / partners.




  • Coordinates, monitors and reports on project progress both internally and with external partners




  • Assists with the quality control of the deliverables by KIT/SRTRO so that they meet the highest possible quality standards




  • Assists in project and event planning and implementation with preparation of budgets of different activities according to the needs;




  • Monitors security updates for Afghanistan; informs key team members of significant changes; keeps visiting international team members appraised of the updated security situation and advises accordingly.



Additional Information


The initial appointment is for one year, subject to renewal. KIT values a diverse and international workforce. The data collected by the project in the context of post-conflict reconstruction can be made available for purposes of scientific publication and/or a PhD study.


We ask



  • Postgraduate degree, preferably at the level of a PhD, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of public health and/or project management;




  • Working experience in Afghanistan, preferably with international organizations;




  • Experience with large-scale M&E projects a strong advantage;




  • High level of organizational skills; able to work with little supervision, focused, well organized, detail oriented;




  • Able to prioritize work, multi-task and meet deadlines;




  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Stata and/or budget tracking tools an advantage;




  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; awareness of intercultural relationships;




  • Initiative and creativity; an independent worker and a team player;




  • Willingness to be based in Kabul on a full-time, long-term basis
