Senior Field Engineer II - Raytheon - Fort Lewis, WA





Raytheon IIS is currently seeking a Sr. Field Engineer II to support the Land-Based PHALANX Weapons System (LPWS) Theater Support Program as a Technical Lead and System SME at Fort Lewis, WA. The Technical Lead/ System SME will represent the LPWS program and the organization as a prime contractor on projects. This position is r esponsible for interfacing with the Army customer and civilian program office up to the GS-13 level and is also responsible for the performance of the battery level maintenance team on site. Responsibilities will include influencing on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the LPWS program and organization.

The Technical Lead will also develop solutions to a variety of complex problems. This position interacts with senior internal and external personnel on significant matters often requiring coordination between organizations. The Technical Lead will provide technical guidance to team members and team leads and is expected to be a last line of defense in resolving difficult technical problems. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve objectives would normally have a serious effect upon the administration of the program and organization.


In order to support the LPWS Theater Support Program, the Technical Lead will perform the following duties and responsibilities:


  • Evaluate, assess and provide training to force protection personnel on all configurations of the LPWS. Inspect, test and align the designated systems appropriate specifications.

  • Utilize schematics, drawings, specifications and General Purpose Electrical/Electronic Test Equipment (GPETE) to troubleshoot and repair faults in the systems / equipment.

  • Provide up to date training in the operation, maintenance, alignment and repair of the LPWS.

  • Provide support in obtaining LPWS OEM data (drawings, test data, etc.) through proper channels.

  • Perform other technical duties as assigned.

  • Direct and support the installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of all aspects of the LPWS equipment.

  • Direct and support the installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of communications and electro-optical equipment.

  • Possess the skills required to perform advanced system maintenance and computer system administrative functions.

  • Have knowledge of, and be capable of using, operating systems and database management systems.

  • Perform analysis of system operations.

  • Evaluate and document field operational capability and report results to customer and program office.

  • Be available for assignment to various CONUS/OCONUS sites for extended terms.

  • Participate in training at various U.S. locations prior to deployment.

    Special Work Circumstances:


    Extensive travel will be required; up to 100% to include Afghanistan, and other international destinations. Must be willing and able to deploy to remote international locations with little notification. Must be willing and able to deploy to environments that may include harsh living conditions (extreme heat and cold, deployed living conditions and/or hostile work environment. Some locations will be in the middle-east desert with temperatures above 120 degrees F. Must be willing and able to move and/or lift weights such as test equipment, ladders, tools, and cable reels weighing up to 60 pounds using proper lifting techniques or material moving equipment. Must be willing and able to work 12-16 hours a day and be on call 24/7. Must be willing and able to climb platforms. Must be willing and able to work in a bivouac environment. Must be willing and able to travel over rough uneven terrain.


    Employment is contingent upon meeting all medical requirements for overseas assignment including comprehensive post-offer medical examination.


    Required Experience :


    • A minimum of six years of experience in Combat Systems Support. With years hands-on experience in trouble shooting and maintenance of the Phalanx MK15 Close-In-Weapon-System.

    • Advanced military CIWS system training.

    Experience in fault detection, isolation, and correction of computer systems and individual peripheral devices.

    • Direct experience with systems integration, software, and electro-mechanical systems.

    • Ability to plan, schedule and complete all activities required to meet established goals.


  • Have knowledge of, and be capable of using, operating systems and database management systems.
    • Excellent communication skills.

    • Knowledge of Military protocol.

    • An active Secret (or higher) clearance is required for this position or the ability to obtain an Interim Secret clearance within 10 days of hire.

    Desired Experience :


    Ability to work independently. Prior field experience and/or military service.


    Required Education : Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Aeronautical, or Avionics field; Work Experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
