The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is a research organization and museum devoted to the study of the ancient Near East. Founded in 1919, it is an internationally recognized pioneer in the archaeology, philology and history of the Near Eastern civilizations.
The research objective of the Oriental Institute is to integrate archaeological, textual, and art historical data to understand the development and functioning of the ancient civilizations of the Near East from the earliest Holocene through the Medieval period. The Institute achieves this by conducting archaeological excavations, artifact analyses, the development of new research methodologies, the stewardship of systematic museum collections, philological studies, historical research and the development of dictionaries of ancient languages. The Oriental Institute Museum, open to the public is a world renowned showcase for the history, art, and archaeology of the ancient Near East.
Unit Job Summary
The Center for Ancient Middle Eastern Landscapes at the Oriental Institute (CAMEL) is a laboratory dedicated the investigation of long-term change in Middle Eastern landscapes and environments through the analysis of spatial and remote sensing data. (75%) Specialist will plan an important role in the Oriental Institute Afghanistan Archaeological Heritage Mapping Project, funded by the US State Department The goal of this project is to produce a geospatial database of archaeological sites all over Afghanistan and to remotely assess the level of preservation at these sites using satellite imagery; responsibilities related to overseeing various GIS tasks related to the creation and use of the database for cultural heritage and archaeological research. (25%) Will work on database development for the National Museum of Afghanistan-OI Partnership project.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted required.
Advanced degree in a field relevant to the research being conducted preferred.
Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant research experience required Knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS suite is essential. Demonstrated leadership abilities. Basic computer skills with Windows and Microsoft Word and Excel as well as excellent organization and personal initiative are a must.
