The position
The French Medical Institute for Children (FMIC) was founded in 2006 is a unique public-private partnership between the Governments of Afghanistan & France, a French NGO – La Chaine de L’Espoir/Enfants Afghans and the Aga Khan Development Network through the Aga Khan University Hospital. FMIC embodies a sign of hope for the medical care of children in Kabul. The Institute has risen to the challenge of charting a course towards sustainable health solutions for Afghanistan. It is the first ISO certified hospital in Afghanistan, aiming to provide compassionate, accessible, cost-effective, high quality care services to the population of Afghanistan. Currently the hospital provides 85-bedded inpatient care for children, including 15 beds for paediatric intensive care, four operation theatres, a department of radiology which includes CT-Scan and MRI capabilities, a state-of-the-art laboratory, a 24 hour pharmacy service and outpatient services for the adult population in medical and surgical specialties. This year FMIC will start new services for adult care such as adult Cardiac Care and 66 new beds for maternal care. FMIC also runs a Postgraduate Medical Education and is now working towards expansion of its health services towards establishing a comprehensive 400 bed Academic Medical Complex in Kabul, which will serve not only the Afghan population but Central Asia as well, as a Medical Centre of excellence.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible to:
- supervise all the technologist and Technician in the lab for section of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Hematology, Serology and Coagulation
- implement safety regulations and quality assurance system
- ensure availability of control standards and its regular utilization
- advice on choice of different media for growth and identification of various pathogens
- advice on methods of collection of specimens for various cultures as well as for fungal microscopy by skin scrapping & nail clipping and collection of urine from catheterized patient etc.
- report interpretation and handling of patients/ physician compliance/ concerns
- update and follow infection control procedure within the institution and laboratory
- liaison with doctors and coordination with marketing team
- verify all results for the test performed at FMIC Lab and at the 3rd party diagnostic facilities
- monitor laboratory inventories ie medical surgical supplies, quality control and reagents
- ensure timely reporting of all test results
- train all technologist to perform microbiology tests
- liaison with other laboratories in Kabul to achieve service benefits
- monitor plans and collaborate with bio-medical engineer for preventive maintenance of equipment and backup plans
- conduct at least two training sessions a week for the laboratory staff
- participate in CME (Continuous Medical Education) activities
- visit to general practitioners, hospitals and companies for feedback and short academic presentations
- monitory infection control protocols and create awareness for the clinical areas of the hospital
The requirements
You should have:
- FCPS in Clinical Pathology with two years of experience or MCPS in Clinical Pathology with five years of experience or equivalent
- teaching experience of postgraduate medical students
- ability to lead teams and be a team player
- good interpersonal and communication skills
- have sound knowledge of clinical procedures and emerging infection diseases commonly encountered in clinical practice
- ability to develop laboratory bench protocols for the technical staff
- ability to correlate the laboratory test finding with the clinical picture of the patient
- ability to advice on the antimicrobial therapy of the patients
- overall quality control protocols essential for standard work in the clinical laboratory
- knowledge in confidences in interpretation of laboratory reports
- ability to monitor smooth functioning of clinical laboratory and able to handle administrative issues of the working staff
- knowledge to impart basic educational sessions on laboratory safety and clinical laboratory functioning to laboratory staff
- skills to develop infection control protocol and create awareness for the clinical areas of hospital
- ability to demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of other cultures, values and belief systems
- ability to demonstrate adaptability, flexibility and tolerance for ambiguity
