Summary:


The Communication Radio Technician shall maintain and repair electronics such as military and commercial off the shelf transmit/receiver radios, digital voice recording systems (DVRS), enhanced terminal voice switches (ETVS), land mobile radios/base station (LMR), and communications switches. Principal accountabilities. These individuals shall demonstrate the ability to apply comprehensive technical knowledge to solve complex problems (i.e., those that cannot be solved solely by properly interpreting manufacturers’ manuals or similar documents) in working on electronic equipment. Work requires familiarity with the interrelationships of circuits and judgment in planning work sequence and in selecting tools and testing instruments, usually less complex than those used by the Level III Technician. At some locations, these individuals shall provide troubleshooting and technical support to information technology systems and equipment.


Essential Job Functions: (not limited to duties as described – performs related duties as requested)


  • Performing preventive maintenance on ATC communications systems and related equipment.

  • Perform system repairs and preventive maintenance on Air Traffic Control radio systems and related equipment. Specific electronic equipment supported may include CM-200 Ground to Air Radio, ETVS (BS2) Enhanced Terminal Voice Switch, PL 2000 DT, and AN/TPN-19 radio equipment (GRC-171 and GRC 211), GRR-23/24, GRT 21/22, PRC-117, RT-1319, TRC-176, URC-200, Liberty Star, Motorola XTS 4000/5000/6000, Tetrapol TPH-7XX/TETRA-THR9/TETRA-THR8XX

  • Inspecting equipment at specified intervals determining operational status

  • Replaces defective components

  • COMSEC procedure and management

  • Performs operational checks

  • Maintains inspection and maintenance records

  • Maintain Facilities Status Records (e.g.: AFTO 499, 512, 214, etc.)

  • Independently verifies operational condition of METNAV and integrated systems to be within prescribed parameters IAW applicable Technical Order/Manual or other supporting documentation (commercial manuals, FAA Orders, etc.)

  • Experience working with ATC VSAT systems which includes:

    Ø Performance preventative maintenance on ATC VSAT equipment.

Ø Replacing defective components.


Ø Configuring/reconfiguring ATC VSAT networks.

Education & Experience: (or equivalent)


· HS Diploma or GED.


·Must have attended a DOD or FAA electronics or industrial school course of instruction, or an accredited correspondence school.


·Minimum of 5 years of experience/background in electronics repair, maintenance and testing and a minimum 3 years electronic repair maintenance and test of the ATC Communications systems.


· Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on SkyWAN ATC VSAT equipment is a plus


License & Certifications:


Completion of a DoD or FAA Electronics Systems and Technology course, or equivalent course of study.


Knowledge & Skills:


  • Knowledge and skills to maintain and repair ATC communications systems and related equipment.

  • Must have the technical knowledge to solve unusually complex problems, and be able to exercise independent judgment in performing tasks in support of electronic systems or electronic equipment.

  • Participate in and provide technical assistance during system flight inspections.

  • Maintain diagnostic tapes, tools, support, and test equipment.

  • Maintain accountability of all parts of appropriate systems, spare parts and requisitioning of spare parts.

  • Proper safety procedures in system maintenance and operation IAW OSHA guidelines.

  • Knowledge of the principles of electricity and electronics.

  • Knowledge of electricity and electronics circuitry.

  • Knowledge and the ability to interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, schematics, manuals, handbooks and technical specifications.

  • Perform preventative maintenance.

  • Maintain records.

  • Problem Solving.

  • Ability to provide technical guidance and supervision to lower level technicians.
