Women for Afghan Women (WAW) is a grassroots, human rights organization. Founded in April 2001, we have built programming to secure, protect, and advance Afghan women’s human rights in New York and across Afghanistan.
Mission: WAW is dedicated to securing and protecting the rights of disenfranchised Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York, particularly their rights to develop their individual potential, to self-determination, and to be represented in all areas of life: political, social, cultural and economic. Position Description
Women for Afghan Women is seeking a detail-oriented, creative, energetic, respectful and understanding individual to join our team as the Case Worker.
The Case Worker will be a part of the New York Program team and will work closely with the Program Director and Executive Director, The Case Worker direct supervisor will be the Program Director. Main Responsibilities
The Case Worker will be responsible for:
- Perform intake interviews of women in crisis who need emergency services.
- Accompany or arrange for women to be accompanied to hospitals and other medical facilities when necessary
- Accompany or arrange for women to be accompanied to social service agencies (e.g., welfare centers, SSI centers).
- Assist in developing cases for women required to appear at fair hearings.
- Refer women to other organizations for additional services (e.g., counseling, shelters).
- Advice women about services they are entitled to.
- Translate on behalf of women.
- File USCIS forms for clients facing language barriers.
- Assist the victims/survivor of domestic violence in obtaining refuge into shelters while their case, divorce, etc.…is being processed.
- Responsible for entering all new clients contact info to WAW contact database ( File Maker)
- Keep detailed client records
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Speaking and reading proficiency in Dari and/or Pashto
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team
- Proactive work ethic and enjoyment in creating and implementing new initiative
- Positive can-do attitude, collaborative approach, and high emotional intelligence
- Passion for human rights and gender equality
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness
Additional Skills and Qualifications (preferred but not required):
- Experience working in a grassroots nonprofit organization, preferably for women/girls
