Team Leader National Mental Health Survey Afghanistan HealthNet has been working in Afghanistan since 1993 particularly in the areas of supporting primary health care, providing mental health care and combating disease. For our program in Afghanistan, HealthNet is looking for a Team Leader who will conduct a nationwide mental health survey.About us: HealthNet is a Dutch aid agency that works on health care in areas disrupted by war or disasters. In these areas people are facing the immense task of rebuilding society while they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional consequences of conflict. We use ‘health’ as both a goal and means: the goal is to reach accessible health care for all. By working on that together with local communities we use ‘health’ as a means to bring people together and to restore mutual trust. Your project : This position is for the role of team leader in a project whose objective is to provide an accurate and updated estimate of the prevalence of common mental disorders in Afghanistan. These will include depression, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), suicide, suicide ideation and suicide attempt and substance abuse. A nation-wide survey will be conducted to investigate the demographic and socio cultural determinants (risk factors and protective factors) associated with these disorders and estimate the treatment gap between those with a mental disorder and those receiving appropriate treatment.
The Team Leader will be based out of the HNTPO office in Kabul, with frequent travel to provinces. The team leader will receive technical support from a senior technical team based in Amsterdam, and will work in coordination with the Senior Management in Kabul.
The duration of the project is 12 months starting February 2016, the team leader must be available for the duration of the project and be based in Afghanistan.
Your responsibilities and tasks:
Your main tasks are: · Design the survey which includes methodology, sampling strategy, sample size determination, sample selection, development of procedural guidelines questionnaire etc.
· Selection and training team including selection and training of surveyors.
· Field work which includes field test, field level data collection, follows up of absentees, spot checking. Conduct data quality control to make sure that the date are up to standard comparing quality control checklist.
· Development of a data base, data entry including double checking, data analysis, data management, supervision quality control procedure of the survey.
· Draft report of the survey
· Findings of the survey will be presented to stakeholders and Technical Advisory Group (TAG)
· Produce timely reporting
You have/ are:
· Master Degree in Epidemiology / Public Health or related relevant field for this assignment · Proven experience with psychiatric epidemiology, multi variate analyses of data, and processing large data sets.
· Previous experience in design and conducting of epidemiological studies and surveys, and/or research involving statistical analysis.
· Experience with academic reporting of study findings
· Knowledge and experience working in fragile countries, preference is given to previous experience in Afghanistan;
· Leadership skills able to motive and guide a culturally diverse team;
· Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexible and calm in a challenging environment;
· Excellent interpersonal communication skills with Health Authorities and community officials.
· Fluency in written and spoken English, knowledge of spoken Arabic and local languages is an advantage.
