The position
The Aga Khan Foundation, Afghanistan (AKF (Afg)) is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) www.akdn.org at http://www.akdn.org , a group of international, private, non-denominational development agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people in some of the poorest parts of the developing world. The Network’s organizations have individual mandates that range from the fields of health and education to architecture, rural development and promotion of private-sector enterprise and institutions that seek to empower communities and individuals, usually in disadvantaged circumstances, to improve living conditions and opportunities.
As one of the largest development agencies in Afghanistan, AKF currently delivers its development interventions in four regional offices, Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan and Bamyan. At the regional level, all activities are led by the Regional Director.
AKF Afghanistan is now seeking exceptional individuals to fill various positions ofRegional Directorat our Regional Offices.
Objective:
The Regional Director leads the implementation of Aga Khan Foundation Afghanistan’s rural development (market development, human and institution development, infrastructure, and natural resource management), health, and education programs. Co-leads the coordination of all Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) activities at the regional level.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads and manages the implementation of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) development initiatives at the regional level,
Implements and updates the Regional Strategic plan;
Contributes to strategic programmatic directions through the identification of needs, opportunities and potential partners;
Actively pursues new initiatives, identifying opportunities, effective collaboration and potential partnerships;
Maintains constructive and positive relationships with colleagues across regions and with the National Office.
Models and ensures the application of organizational values across the organization.
Accountable for the design and monitoring of the regional budget, ensuring efficient and effective program implementation within approved budgets;
Manages sector specialist teams with a view to optimize motivation, ownership and synergy through participatory planning and an integrated approach towards implementation;
Oversees the organization of monitoring processes and effective approaches in all regional programs, constantly seeking excellence. Oversees knowledge management and information systems related to the region’s socio-political, and economic characteristics, and the range of developmental activities being carried out in the region, including the AKDN;
Ensures timely and quality grant reporting and proposal development in line with the existing regional strategic and operational planning;
Promotes AKDN’s good relations in the region with political/government authorities, communities, academic and business institutions and donors/partners representing AKDN in the region;
Advises the supervisor about any challenges, programmatic and administrative, in relation to the program implementation and the organization of continuous presence in the region;
Oversees the efficient use and maintenance of all AKF assets in line with organizational policies;
Organizes and actively pursues staff capacity building and learning;
In coordination with supervisor, is responsible for the security of all AKF employees in the region;
Carries out the responsibilities of the role in a way that reflects AKF-A’s commitment to protecting children in accordance with the Child Safeguarding Policy.
Occasional Significant Duties:
Coordinate emergency response with other AKDN Agencies in the region;
Participates in Regional SMT meetings, YPO review meetings with each sectors and Regional Management meeting;
The requirements
Master’s Degree/PhD in rural development or other related field preferred. Certification or diploma in project management, post conflict rural development management, safety & security, disaster risk reduction or development will be an advantage;
Minimum 10 years of experience in development and/or program management with significant experience in post conflict areas and in complex security environments. Minimum 3 years of experience managing an office with diverse programs/projects activity with annual budget of more than 3 million USD.
Proven leadership qualities including excellent interpersonal, advocacy and team building skills in cross-cultural contexts;
Proven track record in working with government and non-government stakeholders, civil society, and international donors;
Sound management experience in program support: administration, finance, and HR;
Excellent communication skills in English, and preferably in Dari.
