Power Plant Mechanic


Reports to: Power Plant Supervisor


Performance Location: The individual filling this position will be supporting PAE on a contract for the US Department of State and working at the US Embassy and/or its outlying sites in Kabul, Afghanistan. Periodic travel with extended overnight stays may be required while working on projects and other locations in Afghanistan. Percentage of travel will vary significantly but on average is expected to be less than 10% of the total time

Working Environment: The candidate will work on construction and maintenance sites including exposure to the dangers inherent with such sites

Work Schedule: This position works ten hours/day six days a week minimum, is on-call 24/7 and must be willing to quickly respond to all critical customer service issues as required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Theoretical knowledge and functional/operational work experience of power generation, control room, various size generators (CAT 3512), (CAT 3516), alternators CAT 1MV, 24vDC to 15kVAC power generation-distribution grid, GE and Siemens systems, PLC and electronic controls, switchgear, step-up and step-down transformers, substations, fusible switches, SCADA system and automatic transfer switches.

  • Assists Lead Mechanic with supervising staff and provides effective leadership, team building and consensus building skills with colleagues, supervisors and subordinates.

  • Operate, maintain and repair all diesel engines and electrical generators.

  • Responsibilities include the operation & maintenance of engines, generators, engine and paralleling controls, and switchgear.

  • Perform engine repair or engine re-builds.

  • Perform weekly, monthly, quarterly maintenance on all engines.


  • Understand gasoline power engines and their repair.

    Minimum Acceptable Experience and Qualification Levels:




  • Must have experience with basic electrician’s hand tools.



  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office


  • Must have experience repairing diesel engines.

    Education:




  • Graduate of a power generation or diesel engine trade school or certifying course




  • Must have at least 3 years experience or schooling in the electrical trade.

    Language Requirement:




  • Must be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English.




  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate with employees, upper-level management and DoS customers.

    Citizenship:




  • US Citizenship is not required for this position.

    Clearance:




  • Must have a Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) or the ability to obtain one
