Political Director - Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America - Washington, DC

IAVA is seeking a strategic leader to expand IAVA’s political power and influence. Over the last 10 years, IAVA has become one of Capitol Hill’s most respected advocacy groups that has led fights to pass the New GI Bill, address suicide among troops and veterans, and end the backlog of disability claims once and for all. Now, we are looking for an experienced leader to help take us to the next level.


The Political Director needs to be able to move quickly and manage a wide portfolio of projects and relationships. We will call on you to develop highly effective advocacy campaigns leveraging partnerships and IAVA’s c4, and we will dare you innovate new ways to accomplish our goals. We’re looking for someone who can execute plans under dynamic conditions, and lead a smart, committed team in an exceptionally fast-paced environment.


Reporting to IAVA’s Chief Policy Officer in the Washington, DC office, the Political Director will represent Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to constituency organizations, the Executive Branch, and in media and events around the country.

Key Responsibilities


Build IAVA’s political power and influence: Work with the Chief Policy Officer, Legislative Director and Research Director to determine the direction of IAVA’s policy work. Develop and execute political strategy, to include incorporating and developing the IAVA Action Fund, a c4 sister organization of IAVA.


Manage coalitions and partnerships among constituency organizations: Develop relationships and organize coalitions among key constituencies, including veteran and military service organizations. Lead efforts to partner with non-military organizations, such as education, mental health and women’s groups, on shared advocacy priorities. Represent IAVA to The Military Coalition, a coalition of the leading 33 military and veteran organizations.


Inform political messaging: Collaborate with IAVA’s Communications Department to build political messaging and to identify and train spokespeople from IAVA’s members and allies. Author and edit blog posts, op-eds, and reports.


Represent IAVA members to the Administration: Lead efforts to achieve IAVA policy priorities through Executive Branch action. Form and maintain relationships with the Administration, including White House, VA and DoD officials.


Act as a spokesperson: Represent IAVA’s members effectively at public events, and in the national and local media.


Lead election year programs: Oversee efforts to educate voters and candidates on the issues confronting veterans in each campaign cycle and monitor new veteran candidates, to include managing IAVA’s c(4) Action Fund.


Required Experience:
The ideal candidate has worked as a manager or director in a policy advocacy, or campaign environment, overseeing a talented and hard-working staff under significant time constraints. Additionally, they will possess:


3-5 years campaign experience.


Extensive leadership, organizational, and strategic-planning experience.


Demonstrated ability to build and maintain alliances among constituency organizations.


Preferred Experience


Expertise in military and veterans’ issues and constituencies.


Media experience.


One or more tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and/or Operation New Dawn (OND).


Required Skills:
Strong analytical thinking.


Impeccable writing and editing for audiences both internal and external to the organization.


Comfort with frequent public speaking.


Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage tight timelines, simultaneous projects, team responsibilities, and external expectations.


Balance of strong teaching and mentoring skills with a constant desire to keep learning.
