Software Engineer II - BAE Systems - Burlington, MA

Job Description:
“I’m a software engineer.”

That’s the typical answer you give people like your Great Aunt Edna when they ask, “What do you do for work?” This is usually followed up with an “oh, that’s nice” or a blank stare. The reality is that you’re not just a software engineer. You may have other roles and responsibilities, but trying to explain them to someone outside of your field just gets more blank stares. Those of us at BAE Systems who have worked at other companies can relate.

It does not have to be that way.

The Software and Systems Engineers within the PTI directorate at BAE Systems have had the opportunity to answer that question with the following responses:
  • I lead a team of engineers working on a system that protects soldiers from IEDs in Afghanistan

  • I integrate tracking software onto the MQ-9 Reaper drone

  • I work on software to protect large naval ships from smaller vessel attacks

  • I develop tracking software for the Department of Homeland Security and the Customs and Border Patrol to detect border crossing activity

The engineers at BAE Systems believe in creating and integrating software that makes a direct and positive impact on the world. We work with top research organizations including DARPA, Army Research Labs, Air Force Research Laboratory and the Department of Homeland Security. We integrate systems that are deployed throughout the world and often travel to the field to perform field tests and installations. In recent years, our engineers have had opportunities to experience once-in-a-lifetime activities such as spending a week at sea onboard an active aircraft carrier (and being launched from the deck), executing ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) missions on an aircraft in Afghanistan, and driving with Customs and Border Patrol agents at the Mexico/Arizona border.

Our work is not limited to just writing and integrating software. We provide career growth opportunities in areas such as business development, proposal writing, leadership and management.

Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED) Technologies and Integration (PTI) is a ~30 person directorate within the BAE Systems Technology Solutions Fusion, Battle Management, and Computing technology group (TS FBC) based in Burlington, MA. We are part of a 1979 MIT spin-out company that was acquired by BAE Systems in 2004 and has since grown to more than 300 researchers, system engineers, and software developers, over 70 percent of whom hold advanced engineering and science degrees.
