Research Assistant - UNC-Chapel Hill - Chapel Hill, NC





The Department of Anthropology is seeking a research assistant to participate in the collection and interpretation of qualitative interviews for an anthropological study. The study will explore the experiences and concerns of veterans and military services members who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and their families. Responsibilities: -Receive training in qualitative anthropological fieldwork methodologies including interviewing, participant observation, coding and interpretation of interviews, and writing and analyzing field notes; -Help identify and enroll potential interview subjects; -Work with researcher to develop questions for and set up interviews and focus groups; -Conduct interviews with co-researchers; -Transcribe interview recordings. Sensitivity to confidentiality issues and research ethics is a must. Please note that interviews may require local travel. Research assistant-ship may lead to opportunities for co-publishing with the principle researcher.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience: Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred Qualifications: Strong preference will be given to veterans and service members. Preference may be given to candidates with previous anthropological coursework and experience in interview methods. Access to a private vehicle is preferred but not absolutely necessary. Most important is that the candidate be enthusiastic about research, open to learning qualitative methodologies, be self-directed and highly detail-oriented, and be motivated and willing to conduct interviews in a group or alone.
