Nurse Practitioner - Compensation and Pension - Department of Veterans Affairs - Milwaukee, WI



There is a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Compensation and Pension Clinic within the Primary Care Division at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This position is day shift, Monday-Friday. The Nurse Practitioner will be a key member of the primary care medical team providing direct care to our Veterans. The Nurse Practitioner will also serve as a Registry Coordinator for the VA Registry Program to address veteran issues related to exposure to Agent Orange, Ionizing Radiation, Airborne Hazard, Open Burn Pit issues, and health issues related to deployment to SWA and Afghanistan.

Responsibilities include:


  • Provide comprehensive services to patients-obtain histories, conduct physical examinations; collaboratively assess, diagnose and treat acute and chronic medical conditions in conjunction with a Primary Care Team

  • Teach and counsel patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, plan of care, and modify treatment plans as disease progresses

  • Consult and collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals to manage complex health problems. -Support the advanced clinic access (ACA) principles to improve clinic flow, reduce number of visits, and improve patient wait time in clinic

  • Participate in VA Medical Center Performance Measures and quality improvement activities

  • Participate on interdisciplinary councils, tasks forces and committees as assigned

  • Participate in selection and development of patient education materials

  • Advance clinical knowledge of self and others by presenting continuing education programs for nursing and medical staff

Registry Coordinator:

  • Perform telephone assessments as well as comprehensive medical examinations, including diagnostic testing to determine if veteran has a Registry related diagnosable disease.

  • Document interaction/communication with registry veterans

  • Make appropriate referrals, and provide feedback to veteran

  • Responsible for completion of registry worksheet and entering data into larger database

  • Participate in quarterly conference calls to insure up to date information and disperse current data found in newsletters published bi-annually

  • Stay abreast of new or potential registries for camp LeJeune Water issues, Camp McClellan, C125, Agent Orange, etc.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday; Day Shift
