Resource Development (RD) staff work in three main areas: 1) raising private funds and cultivating and maintaining relationships with private donors; 2) defining the agency’s brand, raising our public profile and sharing stories about our work by engaging with the media, the public, and our supporters and producing a wide range of online and offline communications; and 3) teaching visitors to our Portland Action Center about issues of global poverty and engaging them in efforts to end it. The RD team includes several dozen dynamic professionals who possess a wide range of skills. We are database managers, web developers, digital marketers and public relations experts. We are writers, designers, photographers and teachers. We are fundraisers with expertise in direct response, online, community, major gift and corporate giving. We are specialists in fundraising analysis, stewardship, prospecting and customer service. Most of all, we are passionate about Mercy Corps’ mission and dedicated to supporting our worldwide team that’s improving the lives of 19 million people in 36 countries.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Email Marketing Manager sits on the digital marketing/fundraising team and is responsible for leading and implementing a segmented email communications strategy that meets fundraising targets and other response KPIs. He/she will drive multi-segment strategy & testing while also managing the production process and overseeing building and deployment with the Email Developer. The person in this position will work closely with internal stakeholders and program owners and external consultants on copy and should be able to manage the evolution of email templates, craft copy and subject lines when needed, create and update landing pages, and provide sign off on every email.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop and execute a multi-segment email marketing strategy designed to acquire, upgrade and cultivate donors, in collaboration with Digital Marketing Director and external consultants.
Project manage campaign execution in coordination with the Email Marketing Developer and other key stakeholders
Proofread all email marketing campaign materials and provide the final sign-off to vendors.
Collaborate with other team members to develop integrated, multichannel campaigns and donor contact streams.
Develop and manage the calendar of marketing emails, including fundraising asks, advocacy actions, event invitations, cultivation pieces, and newsletters. This includes being in tune with current events and suggesting content strategies that are best able to meet communications and fundraising goals.
Create a measurable test plan and maintain the body of knowledge related to results.
Analyze campaign results and develop reports detailing all key email marketing metrics including delivery, opens, clicks, conversion, opt-out and revenue, and present results to colleagues.
Develop and optimize strategies for acquiring and retaining email prospects and maintaining list hygiene, including list acquisition, e-appends, and email preference management.
Communicate with Development Operations and Donor Services about marketing goals and plans, solicit their feedback on qualitative donor response metrics, and rectify donor complaints as needed.
Ensure that deadlines are met for each project at each stage of production. Work with each person involved to uphold the fundraising or communication goals.
Stay abreast of current email marketing trends, new technology solutions, and competitive strategies, especially in fundraising.

WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Direct Response Engagement and Marketing; Development Operations; MarComms; Major Gifts team; Corporation and Foundation team; fundraising consultants; vendors.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
BA/S in Marketing, Communications, or relevant field, or equivalent work experience
At least four years experience in email marketing, preferably in email fundraising
Knowledge of email best practices and how they apply to fundraising
Experience analyzing and reporting on data
Experience using one or more ESP
Basic experience with basic HTML and web design preferred
Experience with content management systems preferred
SUCCESS FACTORS:
The successful candidate will have excellent strategic-thinking skills, strong written communication and editing skills, very high attention to detail, and ability to edit for accuracy, clarity and length. S/he will be proactive in identifying gaps and problems and working to resolve them, be able to work well with colleagues, weigh competing interests to determine optimal email calendar and be able to collect and analyze appropriate data to drive strategic decisions.
LIVING /ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Position is based in Portland, OR. Some evenings/weekends required during emergency responses; occasional travel required within the US.
Mercy Corps Team members represent the agency both during and outside of work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC’s policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
