Afghanistan: Project Director, Afghanistan
World Learning, a global non-profit organization, (www.worldlearning.org) is recruiting for a Kabul-based Project Director for an anticipated Department of State program entitled “English Language and Cultural Sensitization Camps”. Summary of the program:
To support six camps designed to teach English language and personal development skills to a diverse audience of Afghan youth. Camps will take place outside of Afghanistan but within the region and be three weeks in length, twice per year.
Responsibilities of the Project Director:**
· Oversee the implementation of the overall program, supporting activities within and outside of Afghanistan at the selected camp location
· Supervise recruitment, screening, and onboarding of all camp participants (youth and educators) with World Learning and State Department guidance
· Oversee pre-camp preparation, including visa processing and pre-departure orientation, as well as post-camp follow up monitoring, including alumni workshops and community engagement activities
· Provide logistical support for six groups of Afghan youth and educators who will each travel and participate in a three week camp outside of Afghanistan
· Supervise 3-7 outreach and logistics coordinators in Afghanistan;
· Oversee all camp activities in the selected camp location in coordination with host country coordinator and WL teaching staff
· Submit monthly reports on program and alumni activities to WL DC office;
· Submit monthly detailed expense reports with backup receipts and invoices and monthly advances in a timely manner;
· Comply with World Learning financial systems, policies, and procedures;
· Participate in all training activities for application, administration, and finance processes;
· Submit bi-weekly recruitment reports to WL DC office during the recruitment period;
· Assist the WL DC office on the application process and prepare excel reports of submitted and eligible applicants;
· Interview short-listed candidates, which will include screening for English language abilities, which includes testing each youth’s English proficiency both – written and oral) using application procedures developed by World Learning and in consultation with the State Department
· Act as the lead interviewer of participants across all regions of Afghanistan (virtual or in-person)
· Serve as the in-country point of contact for participants, parents and alumni;
· Assist in arranging round trip travel between Afghanistan and the selected host country;
· Establish relationships and strengthen ties with local institutions and stakeholders;
· Create a network outside of Kabul to diversify the applicant pool;
· Assisting WL in alumni projects and building the Afghan alumni network through the various conferences, follow-on meetings and activities;
· Travel to other regions in Afghanistan may be required.
Required Qualifications:
· Three plus years in managing education and/or youth development programs
· Bachelor’s Degree in Education, International Affairs, Public Administration, International Business Administration or related field
· Strong organizational skills; exceptionally responsive and detail-oriented
· Experience managing a budget and reporting on program progress (technical and financial)
· Ability to work independently without close supervision, to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and to work with personnel of varying backgrounds
· Evidence of interpersonal/intercultural skills and sensitivity
· Excellent oral and written communication skills (Required: English and Dari; Preferred: Pashto)
· Ability to work successfully in a challenging operational environment
· Ability to travel around Afghanistan for work-related activities
Desired Qualifications:
· Experience managing a team, and the ability to coordinate large groups
· Experience with teacher training and/or youth development programming
· Experience communicating with youth and their parents
· Working in difficult operating environments
