About the Position:
This is a TERM position and may be extended in one year increments up to a maximum of four years. TERM positions cannot be made permanent without further competition.
Incumbent serves as the Senior Cultural Advisor (Linguist) to the Commander, US Forces Afghanistan and Resolute Support. Also accompanies the Commander on visits to Key Leader Engagements with senior Afghan officials to serve as his trusted advisor and translator. Incumbent is the primary representative to the US Forces Afghanistan and Resolute Support Commander, incumbent serves as the Commander’s representative during critical events.
This position requires a extended work schedule of: 141 hours (80 regular and 62 hours overtime) a pay period worked; often with 7 days a week, we have no days off, and potential rotating shifts are required.

Duties
- Prepare idiomatically correct and technically accurate translations of critical, sensitive, unformatted material on a wide range of highly complex scientific, technical and conventional and special operations military subjects.
- Design new policy strategies to coalition operations.
- Provide expertise regarding Afghan political leaders, dissidents, leaders, religious and cultural sensitivities.
- Attend high level meeting and conferences to maintain continuing coordination with United State Forces Afghanistan and the Afghanistan government.

- 25% or Greater
- This position requires travel to other duty locations approximately 25% of the time.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.
Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as translating and interpreting a wide range of technical and scientific foreign documents into English, 2) Liaising between United States and Afghanistan officials to develop plans and programs, 3) prepare and publish informational papers for dissemination; 4) Scanning foreign language materials on a wide range of subjects in order to provide information of intelligence value; 5) Providing advice to United States officials on foreign countries religious and cultural sensitivities; 6) Representing the United States government during interactions with foreign news media, community and civic leaders, and political leaders.
Selective Placement Factor: This position requires fluency in the Dari and Pashtu language with a deep understanding of Afghan culture and history.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

- Knowledge of Complex Scientific, Technical and Military Subjects
- Knowledge of Afghanistan Culture
- Ability to Produce Authoritative Translations and Reports
- Skill in Developing Oral Presentation
