ACE is building a team in anticipation to support the Ministry of Public Works of the Government of Afghanistan implementing the Trans Hindukush Road Connectivity Programme (THRCP). The project aims to improve connectivity across the Hindukush mountains through: i) construction of Bamian – Baghlan Highway road; and ii) the rehabilitation of the Salang Pass/Tunnel. The project has strategic importance for the movement of goods and freight between the Northern provinces and Capital of the Country, and is considered part of the resource corridor which is already targeted as a priority to construct by the government of Afghanistan.
Scope of Assignment:
The Highway Engineer(s) report directly to the International Sr. Engineer. S/He will be member of a team of national and international engineers of ACE and MPW to conduct comprehensive review and necessary development of the investigation, surveys, road design, and drainage and protection structures. S/He will undertake and directly supervise technical activities such as: investigation, surveys, designs and preparation of technical documentation in accordance with AASHTO and MPW design standards.
Specific Duties:
Specific responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:
· Prepare road layout and geometric design;
· Undertake calculation of cut and fill quantities using Civil 3D;
· Preparation of plan and profile drawings along with typical cross sections drawings;
· Undertake pavement design in accordance to AASHTO
· Undertake a comprehensive review of existing designs, surveys, and structures to ensure that the designs are compliant and robust as a basis for delivery of the project segments;
· Ensure the assumptions, data and other technical issues used for design including calculations are available and properly documented for future use;
· Review design changes as deemed necessary
· Assist Sr, International Engineer with building the capacity MPW counterpart engineers in road design and construction techniques including construction planning;
· Conduct site visits and provide guidance for improvement and good results;
· Develop and submit weekly and monthly progress reports;
· Any other task assigned by the Sr. International Design Engineer.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering is required.
Experience:
• At least 7 year experience in road and bridge design using AASHTO standards; Highly proficient in design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3-D, HEC-HMS, MX Road and other structural design software.
